Climate-related changes in extreme weather events are a major manifestation of anthropogenic global warming with important societal consequences. Characterising and understanding the occurrence of current extreme weather events, their drivers and interactions sheds light on what to expect in the near future, especially with respect to unprecedented extremes, and which are the implications for climate adaptation.
The Forum is aimed at discussing major questions related to changing weather and climate extremes under global warming, highlighting the capacities of space observations in enhancing their understanding, particularly in data-scarce regions. More specifically, we expect the forum to address three subjects: firstly, how are global and regional drivers of climate extremes changing in response to global warming. Secondly, what to expect in the near future, particularly regarding unprecedented and worst-case scenario extremes. Finally, we expect to discuss ways to provide usable climate information, by leveraging Earth observations, data-driven techniques and climate models, to prepare for the new emerging climate extremes.
